Who chews what

The history of chewing gum, which is usually perceived as an invention of the XX century, has deep roots in antiquity. Soldiers of Alexander the Great chewed branches of wild mint (you can't call it gum, but chewing skills were developed steadily). Eskimos chewed (and chew) whale oil and whale skin.
