It was a cold, windy day and I was rushing through the park on my way to the bus stop. I don't usually take the scenic route, but I was running late and thought taking the park route would save me time as I walked. I saw something fluttering on the path ahead, it was a bright red scarf caught on a bush, I picked it up without thinking.
as I turned to continue walking, I heard a voice behind me: "Excuse me, did you happen to see the red scarf?" I looked up, and there she was, wrapped in a big coat, her cheeks pink from the cold, she looked genuinely worried as if losing that scarf was the end of the world
"Is this it?" I asked, picking it up, she cracked a gorgeous smile and said "Yes, thank you very much, I've been looking everywhere for it", she explained that it was a gift from her grandmother and she would feel terrible if she lost it forever
we ended up walking around together for a bit, just chatting about random things she told me about how she liked coming to this park to clear her head, and I told her it was my first time taking this shortcut, she laughed and said, "Well, maybe it was fate that brought you here today." I didn't know what to say to that, so I just laughed.
When we got to the bus stop, she thanked me again and said, "You didn't just save my scarf, you saved my day." She got on the bus before I could respond, and I stood there for a moment, holding my scarf a little tighter.
It's funny how something so small can stay with you, I still think about her sometimes when I walk through that park, and every time I see someone in a red scarf, I smile.
